What’s a podcast?
A podcast is simply an internet radio show. It’s nothing more than an audio file (usually mp3) that is downloaded via the internet.
How do I listen to a podcast?
First, the good news—you don’t need an iPod! You can listen directly from the internet, you can burn the file to a CD and listen in the car, or, of course, you can download to your mp3 player and listen on headphones.
How is a podcast different from a radio show?
It’s not on the radio; it’s on the internet. A podcast’s reach isn’t limited by the reach of a radio antenna. Your show on healthy living solutions, knitting, how to buy a mortgage or modern attitudes towards race in our society can be downloaded worldwide by anyone with an internet connection.
So… why should I podcast?
- Anyone can do it. The barriers to entry are so low (you can get started for about $30; ask me how) that anyone can have a voice and send it out to hundreds, thousands or millions of listeners worldwide.
- You can reach a niche audience. Podcasts aren’t limited by the market. A podcast on pet care with an audience of 500 would be cancelled instantly in a radio market, but as long as the podcaster is willing and eager to produce shows, this niche podcast will flourish all around the world.
- You can be human. In a world of voicemail menus and robotic “we appreciate your business,” podcasting gives you the chance to show your personality, your expertise and your passion to a worldwide audience; it gives you the chance to set yourself apart by speaking to people in a real, authentic, human voice.
- You can participate in the conversation. If you haven’t read The Cluetrain Manifesto, you should. Markets are conversations, and those conversations about you and your business are going on out there, with or without you. Podcasting (part of the social media, Web 2.0 phenomenon) is a way to engage in the conversation.
- It’s fun! Podcasting gives you a chance to be YOU, to sound off about what you care about on a daily, weekly or whenever basis.
